OLDER MEN FIRST
VIEWS ON RECRUITING BISHOP OF WAIKATO’S IDEA HIS PLAN IF A DICTATOR “I have been requested by the Mayor to say something on recruiting, and I will,” said the Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, Bishop of Waikato, when speaking at the official reception to the Hamilton sailors of H.M.S. Achilles, in the Bledisloe Hall
yesterday afternoon. “I think we ought to be enthusiastic for recruiting after this wonderful welcome to the heroes this afternoon. “I can understand the Government being chary about conscription,” added the Bishop. “If I were the dictator of New Zealand, and I think I would make a good one, I would see to it that everyone of the age of 45 years and upward had to join up. We older ones could put our shoulders back and drill, and although the drilling might not make us up to the young fellows, we would be nearly as good. We have had a good time in life, and we ought to go first.”
