Fewer Bankruptcies Only one petition for bankruptcy was filed with the Official Assignee in Hamilton last month. The peti- j tioner was a builder. In February j last year five petitions were filed. j Napier Memorial Winter Garden A sum of £260, raised by a queen i carnival organised by the Napier ' Thirty Thousand Club in aid of | Napier’s Centennial memorial winter , garden, has been handed over to the ! borough council. The winter garden | is to be erected on Marine Parade. i Borough Loans Two loan proposals for £22,900 and i £19,800, for improvements in Hast- j ings Borough, were sanctioned at a ! poll of ratepayers. A third proposal j to raise £10,600 for roading improve- ! ments was rejected. The first loan i is for water mains duplication, and -the second for stormwater and drainage improvements. No Serious Fires There were no serious fires in the Hamilton Fire Brigade’s area during February. There were four property fires, one rubbish fire and one accidental false alarm. In the corresponding month last year the brigade received calls to two property ( fires and two rubbish fires, while j there was one malicious false alarm. j Malicious False Alarm | A malicious false alarm, delivered | from the alarm box on the corner of Naylor and Nixon Streets, Hamilton East, was received by the Hamilton Fire Brigade at 11.12 a.m. today. An engine was quickly despatched from the fire station, but on arrival the brigade found that there was no one near the box. Supply of Aluminium The Wartime Prices Trade Board has announced that by arrangement with the British Ministry of Supply the Canadian capacity to produce aluminium is being increased sufficiently nearly to equal the German. Britain has purchased the entire output of biennium, less Canada’s requirements. Petrol Coupons The oil fuel emergency regulations No. 3, which make provision for the replacement of lost petrol coupons, enable the commissioner to recall coupons should occasion arise. By way of penalty for a false declaration, the commissioner may prevent a person from obtaining coupons for the duration of the war. Weather Very Warm The marked humidity of the atmosphere in Hamilton yesterday and last night made the day the hottest experienced this month. The weather was oppressive for most of the day and night. The maximum temperature during the day yesterday was only 73 degrees, but 63 degrees was registered at night. Yesterday .05in. of rain fell. Woman’s Thigh Fractured A fractured thigh was received by j Miss Mildred Morris, aged 62, of ; Orua Bay, Manakau, yesterday, when j she slipped and fell at the home of j her sister,’Mrs H. A. Kernott, School j Road, Horotiu. Miss Morris, who j was spending a holiday at Horotiu, ! was removed to the Waikato Hospital, where her condition is report- i ed as satisfactory. Unclaimed Bicycles The owners of some bicycles in Hamilton are either very trusting or neglectful. Within the past few days a number of bicycles have found their way to the Hamilton Police ! station after having been left over I a long period in various streets of j the town._ The collection of these machines is mounting to embarras- ; sing proportions, but a little forethought on the part of owners would relieve the situation. Intruder in House A man entered the home of a Cambridge resident on Wednesday saying he was the representative of a well-known fire insurance company, and had to carry out an inspection. He took measurements of every room, which seemed strange to the housewife. The man proved to be a stranger when her husband stated that night that he had never had any business with the insurance company mentioned. Mine Tragedy Fund In reply to an inquiry, Mr C. HayChapman, Town Clerk of Huntly, stated yesterday that the fund for the relief of the relatives of men killed in the Glen Afton mine i tragedy last September stood at j £1478 6s 4d, and would probably be closed some time next week. The Mayor of Huntly, Mr W. C. E. , George, who was chairman of the fund, had interviewed one or two |of the widows to ascertain their financial positions, and others had j been written to. When all the re- ; plies were received a meeting would ; be held to decide about the distribution of the fund.
