ACHILLES HOMECOMING WELCOME ARRANGEMENTS AUCLAND, Tuesday Extensive preparations are being made to welcome the Achilles when she arrives at Auckland. Streets will be. decorated and employers asked to grant special leave for their staffs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be a march through the city to the Town Hall for a civic reception to the Achilles detachment. A total of about 1600 soldiers will come from Papakura to participate in the welcome, after which Captain Parry, officers and the ship’s company will be entertained at luncheon in the Town Hall. GERMANS SHELLED “VIVE, CHURCHILL!” PARIS, Feb. 19 A French communique states that French guns shelled the Perl Courthouse, containing Germans, and reduced it to rubble, in retaliation for German shelling of Apach. The Germans are more active and are trying to rush the French defences, but an attack east of the Moselle failed. The Paris Bourse responded vigorously to the British naval enterprise in the Altmark incident. There were frequent cries of “Vive, Churchill!” BAND CONTEST RESULTS Boys’ solo, under 17.—D.
