PUPILS SENT HOME

HAMILTON EAST SCHOOL

“ POSITION DISGRACEFUL ” GROUND WORK INCOMPLETE An unusual position has arisen at the Hamilton East primary school. After the long summer vacation the pupils returned to school this week to lind that they will have a halfholiday each day this week and probably a full holiday next Monday. The extra holidays have become necessary because the work of tun ing and sanding the grounds at a cost of £9OO has not been completed The matter aroused severe criticism at the meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday, and ti r chairman of the* board, Mr W. J. Campbell, visited Hamilton to-day to investigate. He was authorised to close the school for a week if he considered it necessary. Member’s Criticism Mr F. A. Snell, of Hamilton, said it was disgraceful that this position should arise. The work was being carried out by the Public Works Department and was begun only two weeks ago when there had been the whole of the summer vacation in which to complete it. The area was that which had been covered by the old school building, which had been removed when a new wing was added to the school recently. Apparently the ground had beer, prepared for tar sealing, but as it was the only route by which the children 6ould enter school it had been badly Jamaged. He did not blame the children, as they had no alternative, but it was stated that the damage would involve further expense in levelling, The only thing that could apparently be done was to close the school until the work was done, although he was opposed to such a measure. Other members agreed that the position called for criticism, while it was also pointed out that at Otorohanga School the playing area had been ploughed up three months ago, and had since been neglected, so that all the initial work was undone and the children had been deprived ol the use of their playing area.

Details of the hours of attendance at the school to-morrow and on Monday are given on page 8.
