SPORTING EVENTS
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR HIGHLIGHTS OF PROGRAMME Favourite holiday period of the year for New Zealanders, the Christmas and New Year week-ends bring a wide range of sporting attractions for Waikato people. Almost every sport is catered for with some major fixture, and, despite the war, the residents of the district will be able to celebrate the festive season in traditional style.
For those who will not be attracted by the scheduled sporting events., the many picnic haunts around the Waikato will have their attractions, while hundreds of other district residents will be at the seaside resorts on annual vacation. Special rail and bus excursions have been arranged for others.
Tonight will be late shopping night. Shops will observe a half-day tomorrow, closing until Wednesday. The following holiday calendar will guide sportsmen to their favourite sport, during Christmas and New i’ear:— December 23 (Tomorrow) Racing.— Manawatu Racing Club. Bowling.—Waikato Pairs Shield, Whitiora v. Frankton, at Frankton: Waikato Rinks, Whitiora v. Huntly, at Huntly. Cricket.—Plunket Shield, Auckland v Wellington, at Wellington. December 25 Cricket.—Provincial cricket tournament opens in Hamilton at Seddor Park; Country Week opens at Auckland; Plunket Shield game. December 26 Racing.—Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Carnival opens at Ellerslie; Taranaki Racing Club, at New Plymouth; Manawatu Racing Club; Dunedin Jockey Club; Westland Racing Club; Waipukurau Racing Club; Alexandra Racing Club (non-totalis-ator), at Pirongia. Trotting.—Gore Trotting Club; Ashburton Trotting Club; Westport Trotting Club. Bowling.—One-day tourney at Whitiora. Cricket.—Provincial tournament continues; Plunket Shield games; Country Week at Auckland. Athletics.—Te Aroha Amateur Sports. Rowing.—Tauranga Regatta.
