THE SIEGFRIED LINE

EXPLOSION IN TUNNEL EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 25 It is reported from Brussels that an explosion occurred in the underground tunnels of the Siegfried Line near Minden. It caused extensive damage, holding up work on the line. The air battles yesterday have given full proof of the quality of the French machines, which are superior in speed and skill to the German fighters. Violent Cannonades For the first time since the war the stretch along the Rhine between Strasbourg and Bale was the scene of prolonged and violent cannonades. The reception given the counterattacks elsewhere appears to have discouraged the Nazis. The earlier reference to the improvement of the French positions on the \Fest Front relates to a rectification of the lines in the region of Blies and Hardt Forest. The actual advance was several hundred metres.
