MATAMATA

ENJOYABLE SOCIAL FIRE BRIGADE MEMBERS Active members of the Matamata Fire Brigade were recently the guests of honour at a social evening arranged by honorary members of the brigade. Mr Wilbert Marks presided at the function, which was held in the brigade social hall. An enjoyable musical programme was presented, the arrangements for which were carried out by Mr Perry Ingham, and a short toast list was honoured. Items were contributed as follows:—Orchestral selections, conducted by Mr P. Ingham; songs, Messrs N. Elley, J. Lee, J. Dewse, C. Vincent; violin solos, Mr B. Kingsford; cornet solos, Mr Roy White; banjo-mandolin solos, Mr C. R. Houghton. The speakers included Mr Wilbert Marks, Mr A. E. Wrigley, (deputymayor), Mr J. Mclntyre, Superintendent G. Stewart, Mr C. Vincent, Mr W. E. Gundy, Mr G. G. Griffiths, Dr. J. G. Mackereth and Mr P. Ingham. HIGH SCHOOL AFFAIRS WATER MAIN EXTENSION PROPOSED CENTRAL HEATING The secretary of the Matamata High School committee, Mr H. Fawcett, has received advice from Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P., that the Minister of Education has approved a grant to cover the cost of extending the four-inch main water supply to the boundary of the High School grounds, in order that the service of the fire brigade could be utilised in the event of fire at the school. In reference to the installation of central heating at the High School, the Minister has informed Mr Doidge that it is the Department’s practice to require the Education Board concerned to make a contribution of one-third of the estimated cost of such improved heating facilities from the maintenance fund, and the board was asked whether it was prepared to make a contribution of onethird of the cost in this case. The matter was considered by the board, but that body was unable at present to contribute the amount required from its maintenance fund, owing to the fact that many calls had been made in connection with other works. The warmer weather was now approaching, and the Min-

ister hoped the board’s finances would be in a position to permit a contribution being made for the work before next winter.
