Children’s Verses

ALL ALONE A litle elf was all alone, And so was Betty, too— So Betty coughed a little cough And said, “How do you do?" And after that they sat and talked For nearly half an hour. But all too soon the time was gone, “ And I must go,” she -said. Betty ran indoors to tea And he ran home to bed. WIDE-AWAKE Every night when I go to bed I think that it isn’t right, For I’m sure that all the exciting things Must happen during the night. I hear the owl in the garden Teaching her babies “ To-whoo,” And the wind and the little brook Whisper the long night through But when I awake in the morning How happy I am to play! It seems to me theu the exciting things All happen during the day. APPLE BLOSSOMS Have you seen an apple-orchard In the Spring, in the Spring? An English apple orchard In the Spring? When the spreading trees are hoary With their wealth of promised glory, An the Mavis pipes his story In the Spring. Have you plucked the apple blossom In the Spring, in the Spring? And caught their subtle odours In the Spring? Pink buds bursting at the light, Crumpled petals baby-white, Just to touch them a delight In the Spring. Have you walked beneath the blossoms In the Spring, in the Spring? Beneath the apple blossom in the Spring? When the pink cascades are falling And the silver brooklets brawling, And the cuckoo bird is calling In the Spring. If you have not, then you know not, In the Spring, in the Spring, Half the colour, beauty, wonder Of the Spring. No sight can I remember Half so precious, half so tender As the apple blossom render In the Spring.
