ANNUAL FIREWORKS DISPLAY GOLF COMPETITIONS (Special to Times) UT URO HANG A, Thursday. At a special meeting of tile Otorohanga Fire brigade it was decided that tins year’s annual display on Guy Fawkes Day he held as usual, the net proceeds to he donated to a local patriotic fund. The lollowing- organisations will be asked to assist m the demonstrations: The I.egion or Frontiersmen, Red Cross society. St. John Ambulance Brigade, and the Returned Soldiers’ Association. LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION Mr A. C. Thompson, president or the King Country Lawn Tennis Association, presented his report at the animal meeting in the hand rooms, Otorohanga, on Txmrsday night. The report disclosed that the past season was the most successful experienced by the sub-association. Several new clubs were aniliated, those competing in the many inter-club contests being Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Te Kulti, Mangapeehi, Waimiha, Ongarue, Endean’s Mill, Ellis and Burnand’s Mills, Mokauill and Taurnarunul. In the llnal inter-club A grade match, Taumarunui dereated otorohanga Tor the Dr. Howard thield. Representative matches were played against the Taranaki, Hamilton and Waipa West Associations. The llnancial position or the association Is satisfactory, the total receipts being a record. A new sub-association embracing clubs In and around Taumarunui is now rormed and will he known as the South King Country Sub-association. in future the North King Country clubs will afliliate under tbe name or the North King country Tennis Sub-association and will include the rollowing:—Otorohanga, Te Awamutu, Plo Pio, Te Kuiti and Mangapeehi TERRITORIAL PLATOONB The Otorohanga and district Territorial platoons will bold uniform parades each Monday evening at 7.15, and civilians of military age are invited to attend. This Territorial force will probably resolve itself Into a training ground for N'.C.O.’s for the successive drarts of volunteers. The force will use the local Rifle Club’s range, under tbe supervision or tbe club's oflicials, each Saturday afternoon. A church parade will he held in accordance with Archbishop Averlll’s appeal for a national day or prayer on October 1. The platoons will parade at the Drill Hall, without rifles or side-arms, and afterwards march to the churches. RED CROSS SOCIETY Dr. A. A. MacFarlane, or Otorohanga, Is delivering a series of lectures on first aid. under the auspices of the Otorohanga branch or the Red Cross society. There have been large attendances to hear him at the Friendly societies' JIaU, and the members are very enthusiastic. Thero are 7 3 llnancial members In the branch, and more are enrolling daily. First aid classes have commenced, and the St. John Ambulance Brigade has almost completed its course of ilrst aid lectures. The Order or St. John and the Red Cross Society are component parts or the Red Cross organisation of New Zealand. Both have a common objective, but some or their spheres of activity are different. Both hold classes in nr*t aid Instruction, and the certillcaies obtainable rrom either have equal value. Red Cross members may go to the St. John lectures without losing their identity, and vice versa. Joint classes may he held when the numbers do not warrant separate classes. GOLF REBULTS The Malhiihl Goir Club has now completed the local competitions, and tbe trophies have been presented by the president to ihe rollowing successful players:—senior men’s championship: a. G. Levien. Junior men’s championship: S. stock. Walters Cup handicap: R. H. Cowern. Osborne Cup ( four-ball matches): S. G. Still and \V. J. smith. In the women’s competition Mrs S. G. Still was again successful in wiiming the championship, the Walters Cup and the Harvey Row I. for the three best net cards during the season.
