FAT STOCK SALES SHARP RISE IN PRICES HIGH RATES FOR BEEF AUCKLAND, Thursday Prices rose sharply at the Westfield Tat stock market yesterday. The Jirst shorn sheep this season made their appearance. Bids for steers went to £lB 17s Gd, the highest since last September, when a bullock made £l9. The increase on last week's best offer of £lB was a fair reflection of the market trend. Cows and heifers shared fully in the improvements, although the best bid at £l3 17s 6d was less than the £l4 las reached at the last sale. Prime fat wethers sold to 40s 6d, against 3Gs 9d last week, and ewes to 32s 9d, compared with 30s Gd. An increased entry of lambs made full late rates, the highest \price being .30s 6d. The small proportion of quality calves was keenly sought. Runners sold to £9 12s, compared with £9. Yealers improved Bs, with sales to £7 10s. The pig market showed an easing tendency. Baconers averaged 6id to G; t ‘d per lb, and porkers 7id to 8d per lb, the top prices in each section being £4 11s and £3 3s. Last week baconers reached £4 13s and porkers £3 10s. Schlaepfer, Paerata, a consignment from Ranginui, Limited, Papatoetoe, realising to £lB 7s Gd. To £ls was offered for the best of a lot sold on account of Mr G. Johnstone, Matamata. Steers traded on behalf of Mr F. M. Dodd, Putaruru, realised to £l2. Cows and heifers marketed on account of the Ngapuke Estate, Papatoetoe, made £l3 lUs. A consignment forwarded by Mr F. Hall, Matamata, reached £l2 ss. Lots from Mr 11.

Windsor, Matangi, and Mr G. McGregor, Mhincwai. sold to £ll 17s 6d. Other quotable lots were sold on account of Mr Pohlen, Matamata, to £9. Dalgety and Company, Ltd. A keen demand for ox and an improvement of 2s per 1001 b. were witnessed at Messrs Dalgety and Company's weekly stork sale at Westfield today. The yarding totalled 181 head of beef, comprised of 80 steers and 101 cows and heifers, against IJ6 head last week. Cow and heifer beef also sold readily at an improvement of 2s per ioOlb. A total of 231 calves was sold. Pigs.—There was an increased offering of pigs. Porkers were plentiful and values for these were lower.
