FIT FOR BACKBLOCKS
HAMILTON FOOTPATHS TRYING CONDITIONS IN WET PLANS FOR £IOO,OOO LOAN “On the outskirts of Hamilton the streets and footpaths are fit for the backblocks only. The conditions that exist in three-quarters of the town footpaths are disigusting. And in wet weather the women and children have to w’alk on grass and through mud,” said the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr H. D. Caro, when outlining to the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last night, l\o\v such conditions would be overcome in the near future. He explained the plans for improving the streets and footpaths by loan money. The Mayor said the Loans Board had authorised the raising of a loan of £IOO,OOO for the \<ork and, early in November, a poll of the ratepayers would be taken seeking sanction for the raising of the money. It was also proposed to make the' main streets better for modern traffic. “It is for the ratepayers to say whether they want the improvements,” said Mr Caro.
