Hammond, England's test captain, added further lustre to his outstanding career in the final test between West Indies and England by scoring his twenty-second century in test matches, thus eclipsing the record he shared with Don Braiman of 2i centuries in tests, lie scohed 138 in a high-scoring match. The test was drawn and England thus regained the rubber lost to West Indies in 1935. A.Ydher rejiord was established during the match when Hammond and the youthful English batsman. L. Hutton, were together to score 264 runs for the third wicket partnership—a new test record. Hammond batted for three hours, hitting 21 fours, while Hutton, who scored 165 not out, was at the wickets for 5 hours 20 minutes, hitting 17 fours. In reply to England's first innings score of 352, West Indies made 498, the English bowling being disappointing. England batted again to make 366 fur three wickets.
