WOMEN’S TOURNEY SOUTH AUCKLAND PLAY POOR QUALIFYING BCOREB With a capacity field of 90 players, including a number of low-handicap competitors, the annual South Auckland women's golf championship opened at St. Andrews links to-day. The two qualifying rounds were played and the first 16 to qualify will commence maieh p.ay to-morrow for the Ellis Cup. the championship trophy. The second 16 qualifiers will compete in the Fraser Cup, and the third 16 in a flight match. Ideal conditions prevailed and the fairways were in the excellent order always associated with winter play at St. Andrews. The greens played quite well also although the early players found them a little tricky as the result of a heavy dew. Honours in* the first qualifying round went, for the most part, to the longer handicap players, but even then only a very few played to form. Generally speaking the scores were not good. The failure of the leading competitors may have been due i.n some measure to the fact that they played early in the morning and encountered more difficult conditions than tiie later competitors. Even when the greens dried out, however, they were still a little inaccurate. Leading Competitors The three leading competitors, Mrs I\ Mander Hamilton), Mrs H. McDonald (Hamilton, and Miss J. Stewart .Whangarci, all failed to break 90. A similar lapse was a feature of the play of the majority of the competitors with single figure handicaps, only one being in the lower 80's; that was Mrs B. Seyb, the 7 handicap Hamilton competitor, who led the first qualifying round with an 82 gross. The holder of the Ellis Cup, Mrs P. R. Glanville (Te Awamutu) was second in the first round with an 86. Miss J. Littleproud (Hamilton), Mrs , C. F. O’Connor (Hamilton) and Mrs S. jßennett (Hamilton) all flayed fairly good golf among the middle handicap players, and several of the higher handicaps also returned good , cards. The senior medal match this morning played in conjunction with the first qualifying round was won tby Miss J. Littleproud (Hamilton , 89, 16—73. Other good scores were Mrs C. F. O'Connor Hamilton, 89, 15—74; Mrs B. Seyb (Hamilton 82, 7—~3; and Mrs S. Bennett .Hamilton) 90, 15—75. The junior medal was won by Mrs J. Galloway (Lochiel) 88, 24—-64.
