ROTORUA OPEN TITLE FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND HUTCHISON LEADS FIELD (By Telegraph.—Special io Times > ROTORUA, Tuesday Steady golf by the early players characterised the opening day of the Rotorua Golf Club's annual open tournament to-day, when ideal conditions prevailed. The course was in first-class order. The best card returned in the morning was that of F. C. Hutchison, the scratch player from Wanganui, who completed the round in 71. R. H. Gladding, the youthltuL Hamilton plus 1 player who hold the title, had trouble with his putter on a number of greens, and at the fifth he was hunkered and took seven to hole out. This affected his card of 78. Pax Smith, also a plus player and holder of the New Zealand amateur title, had several three putts, but his 74 showed promise of better things to come. D. 11. Graham, the North Island champion, was also in trouble on the greens and carded 78. G. H. Brinsden went round in 76. The best of the early cards were: F. C. Hutchison 71, P. G. F. Smith, R. C. Smith, C. Bailey 74; 11. P. Dale 75; J. G. Belk H. D. Brinsden 76; R. Kensington 77; S. E. Carr, D. R. Graham, R. 11. Glading, P. Ralph 78; M. V. Mathers, E. S. Toogood and T. R. Brett 79.
