OBITUARY

CANON W. E. BARNES LATE CAMBRIDGE PROFESSOR (United Pre3s Assn.—Elec. Tel. copyright! LONDON, Aug. 19 The death has occurred of Canon W. E. Barnes, who was Ilulsean Professor of Divinity, Cambridge University, 1901-34, and Canon Theologian of Leicester since 1932. He was 80 years of age. MINE OWNER DEAD COLONEL WILLIAM IIOLGATE Colonel William Douthwaite Holgate, U.8.E., company director, died at his residence, Wynyard Street, Auckland, on Saturday morning, aged 84. He had been a prominent citizen of Auckland for about 40 years, being associated with mining and farm land development, and also with military activities. He was for years deputy-chairman and then chairman of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company, Limited, chairman of Waikato Carbonisation, Limited, and was president of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association from 1926 until his resignation two years ago. Interest In Kawau Coming to New Zealand from Australia in 1890, he acquired an interest in Kawau Island, and subsequently, in conjunction with the Hon. E. W. Alison, opened a coal mine at llikurangi, which later was formed into the Northern Coal Company, of which he was managing director I r 22 years. He also took a prominent part in the development of the Taupiri Coal Company, of which he was a director, and found scope for still wider activities in his association with Waikato Carbonisation, Limited, the Coal Mine Owners’ Association, as chairman of the Scientific Industrial Fuel Board, and as director of various companies. Work In Disputes He was a most effective negotiator in disputes between miners and owners, and the personal esteem in which he was held by both sides was an important factor in many successful settlements. Colonel Holgatc was awarded the 0.8. E. in the Birthday Honours of last ! June. He was a member of the Northern Club, whose tlag, as well as the Hag of the Devonport Steam Ferry Company, was flown at half-mast on Saturday in his honour. He is survived by his wife. LADY FINDLAY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Lady Findlay, widow of tlie late Sir John Findlay, Attorney-General in the Ward administration, died this daughter of the late Mr James Arklu, of Palmerston.
