ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL FIRST ELIMINATION ROUND r DEFEAT ROVERS /. Playing on & Held which was partly under water*, Hamilton Wanderers eliminated </iuudelauil3 Rovers by five goals to ojfte when She first round of the Soutl), Auckland Football Association's ILovyden Cup knock-out competition \\>as played. The play suffered as z[ result of the cond.lions and, although a number of brig.it incidents took the general staudaru was not very high. The teams lined out as toiiows: — Wanderers.—J. Webster, Gardiner, MoLean, d. Crabb, MoUall, Bullock, C. Crabb, Fisher, Rogerson, Stewart, Caldwell. Rovers.'—Schonau, Clark, Jones, Humphries, J. 'Crabb, K. Webster, Rogers McPherson, G. D. Stuart, Rennie. Wallace. Mid-lleld play in which nothing o;f an exciting nature was witnessed, characterised the opening stages before Rovers took up the attack. The slippery nature of Lhe field thwarted Stuart when he went within reach of Webster's goal and Rie 'keeper had no difficulty in clearing. Although Wandere-s retaliated Schonau showed a safe pair of hands and returned the slippery ball in good style. C. Crabb sent a pass from the side-line, but Rogerson failed to connect properly and the movement collapsed. Wanderers maintained the pressure, however, and Caldwell decided matters when lie beat Schonau with a long shot which dropped just under the bar: Wanderers 1, Rovers 0. Webster Clears Smartly Again Webster was sound when the venue returned to his end and lie cleared smartly in the lace of a rush from Stuart. A corner kick availed Rovers nothing and before long the team was back in its own territory again. The conditions were against orthodox methods and as a result tnc play was l'ar from nt nesting. Rovers kept up a fairly strong attack a little later, but Webster rose to Hie occasion again an l clea-'cl well after a few anxious moments Who. the swing of play to tho .nilor end Caldwell sent in a likely goa-ng shut, hut was unlucky when Lhe bah struck Hie cross-bar. Stewart also went close when fie drove a cross-kick up to the goalmouth, but Snioinu was sound and listed the ball cie-.u* just as Rogerson rushed in. Steady, driving rain at this stage increased the players’ diftie. lilies and the (game suffered as a result. A Tree-kick against Rovers looked dangerous when the Wanderers front line was close in, but Schonau held the ball and followed up by clearing well when Stewart ran in. Another goal came to Wanderers when, taking a long pass from Gardiner, C. Crabb advanced the play before passing to Caldwell, who transferred to allow Stewart to send a fast low shot past Schonau. Half-time same without addition to the scores: Wanderers 2, Rovers U. Two More Goals A rather sensational opening was witnessed in the second spell when Wanderers gained the third goal. After a couple of minutes’ play c. Crabb centred with a beautifullyplaced pass and Rogerson gave the •keeper no chance with a l'asl shot into the back of the net. The same player repeated the performance shortly after when, after a melee, he caught Schonau out of position and made Hie score: Wanderers 4. Rovers 0. Tho Rovers’ forwards were not slow to retaliate after this set-back and soon had Wanderers penned up in the mud in front of Webster’s goal. Two ~r three shots were •well saved by the keeper but lie was given no chance when McPherson swung a quick shot into the corner of the net: Wanderers 4, Rovers 1. Rogerson’s Third Goal Although Rovers took the upper hand for a time after this the defence was giving nothing away and although Webster was kept busy the effort availed nothing and the play returned to the midfield fan a long period. When the Wanderers forwards gradually worked the play along the field Rogeraon took possession and, evading Clark '.n fine style, he had little trouble in beating Schonau with a fast shot: Wanderers 5, Rovers 1. The Rovers' forwards set up a solid attack shortly after, but a free kick relieved the position when Stuart charged Webster while the 'keeper was not in possession and the play went back to the midfield. Rather ragged play was witnessed in the closing stages and the final whistle came without alteration to Lhe score— Wanderers 5 Rovers 1 Mr E. R. Marsh was the referee.
