RAILWAY FREIGHTS

NEW GOODB CHARGES BENEFIT TO HAMILTON FIRMS Merchants in Hamilton will benefit by the new scale of railway freight charges which comes into operation tomorrow For some years Auckland firms have been given preference over Hamilton merchants trading with King Country towns owing to the city being affected by road transport lo the southern centres. Consequently it has cost more to send general goods by rail from Hamilton to Hie King Country than it has from Auckland to the King Country, a much longer distance. It has been the general opinion in Hamilton that the revised charges, which it was hoped would operate on June 1 instead of July 1, would cause no injustice to Auckland merchants but would give fairer treatment to Hamilton firms. With this injustice to Hamilton removed, merchants here expect to see the town develop into a greater distributing centre, with the businessmen generally benefit-ting. Also a reduction in retail costs of goods in King Country towns is expected.

According to a statement made by tlie Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Railways, the revised rates introduced a system of charges which had long been sought by commercial interests, by reducing classes of general merchandise from four to two.
