POLICY OF INSULATION
(To the Editor) Sir, —Mr Ravage has promised us that he will insulate us from the effect of slumps in other portions of the globe. It would appear that he will insulate us right enough; we shall find that we can increase production by the use of bulldozers, etc., but if the rest of the world refuses to have dealings with us, small good this will do. Anybody with a grain of sense knows that you cannot make drastic alterations in your political economy without being prepared to pay the price. The price in this instance would be a lower standard of living, but notwithstanding that New Zealand has the highest standard in the world, the representatives of the workers are not yet satisfied, and even if this present standard were raised 100 per cent there would still be the same amount of discontent. Signs are not wanting to point to the futility of the whole business, but till the time arrives when extravagance must be paid for the publio will just drift along, trusting that in some miraculous way things will pan out right.—l am, etc., NOTHING FOR NOTHING. Hamilton, April 17.
