JUDGING IN ENGLAND COMMENT ON CARCASES FINE ENTRY OF BACONERS Favourable comment was forthcoming from Messrs Thomas Borthwick and Sons, London, on the pig classes from the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Royal Show and judged on the hook last month. The following were the placing's:— Porker Class, 60-80 lbs. Pen No. 254, F. J. Barrett, 1; No. 271, J. D. Wallace, 2; No. 256, R. Chilcott, 3. Pen No. 245: Good white pig, a little too fat on back. Pen No. 246: Very good pig, a Little too fat in belly. Pen No. 24*7 : Good short pig. Pen No. 24 9: Very good pig, a Little too long in leg. Pen No. 250: Good white akin pig, a little long in leg. Pen No. 251: Good small pig, white skin. Pen No. 253: Good shape pig but too lean. Pen No. 254: Excellent pig, good shape, light skin and flesh. Short leg, small head and full of meat. First prize. Pen No. 255: Very good pig, too long in leg. Pen No. 256: Excellent shape pig, not such good colour as Pens 254 and 271. Pen No. 2-57: Good long lean pig. Pen No. 258: Long pig, too lean. Pen No. 259 : A little too fat in belly. Pen No. 260: Good small pig, a little too lean. Pen No. 267: Too lean. Pen No. 269: A little too f&t on back. Pen No. 270: A good pig but dark flesh. Pen No. 279: Fat in belly. Pen No. 281: Long lean pig, but falls away in legs. Pen No. 289 : Good white pig, a little too lean. Pen No. 290: A good pig, a little fat in loin. Pen No. 291: A good shape pig, good flesh. Pen No. 293: Excellent pig. Pen No. 297: A good pig, a little flat in loin. Pen No. 298: Good shape pig but dark flesh and fat in belly. Pen No. 303: Good shape pig, a little heavy in forequarter. Pen No. 24*8 : Good shape pig, white skin and flesh, but damaged in log. Porker Class, 101-120 lbs. Pens Nos. 284, 285 and 288: Excellent pigs, light flesh, but too heavy for porker class and -too light for baconer. Porker Sides Pen No. 252: Too lean, dark flesh. Pen No. 260: Too lean. Pen No. 261: Good lean pig, light flesh. Pen No. 278: Too fat. Pen No. 280: Good lean pig. Pen No. 282: Good well-covered pig. Pen No. 283: Too fat. Pen No. 301; Too fat. Pen No. 302: Too fat. Pen No. 303: Good lean pig for the weight. Pen No. 306: Good lean pig. Pen No. 307: Good shape pig and lean. Pen No. 308: Good lean pig, light flesh. Wiltshire Sides These sides were all on the fat side and were too heavy. The ideal weight is between 50 and 60 lbs. Baconers, 121-160 lbs. Pen No. 311, R. Webb, 1; No. 312, E. Thomas, 2; No. 3-27, R. Chilcott, 3. The entries in this class were an exceptionally fine lot of bacon hogs, which rendered the judging most difficult. The judges eventually chose the three winners as being the most suitable for bacon trade.
