Youth Found Shot Henry Owen Holst (18), a farm hand, was found dead at the residence of his father, Mr George Holst, farmer, of Aka Aka, last night with a bullet wound in the head. The body was lying on a pea rifle which had a discharged cartridge in the breach. At the inquest, which was adjourned sine die, the father said his son was in good health, but was apparently upset while having his tea prior to his death. Wheat In Canterbury Millers, grain merchants and experienced farmers are confident that Canterbury’s acreage under wheat will be igreatly increased in the 1939-40 season. Inquiries made in Christchurch show that a number of factors, of which the latest and perhaps the most important is the announcement of the fixed price a year ahead, all tend to a certainty that more wheat will be planted for the 1940 harvest. Buioide Verdict A verdict of suicide while of unsound mind was the finding of the coroner, Mr G. Ebbett, at an inquest in Hastings yesterday into the death of Hugh Thomas McHugh, who was killed at the Hastings railway station on January 27 when he was run over by a train. Deceased was a patient at the Pukeora Sanltorium and was absent from the institution without leave. He was in a depressed state, and was seen to push himself under the wheels of a moving carriage. Prisoner’s Plaint At Palmerston North yesterday before Mr Justice Ostler, Darcy Joseph Steele (25), a motor mechanic, charged with convertjng a motor-car to his own use, was convicted. He alleged that he had been treated unjustly, that counsel had been refused him, and he asked for medical attention as he could not sleep. A report on Steele’s mental state described him as an extremely plausible individual, who denied memory of incidents in his life which might not be to his advantage but showed quite a normal memory for other events and even trivial incidents. He was remanded for sentence. Import Applications It is reported that hundreds of applications for import licenses covering the second half of the year already have been lodged with the Customs Department in Auckland as a result of the promise made by the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. Nash, that the Government was prepared to deal with cases of urgent necessity. Many manufacturers and warehousemen are withholding instructions from travellers who will be selling for next summer and Christmas trade until they know whether goods and materials affected can be obtained from abroad in the last six months of the year.
