TOPICS OF THE DAY
Germany and the Jews “As things are developing,” states the Birmingham Post, “Germany seems to want to keep her Jews—as a slave or Helot class. The only counter is firm action by Mr Chamberlain and Mr Roosevelt preferably in combination. The economic problem is perhaps more difficult. If Germany is ready to release the Jews she hates, where and how are they to be fitted into the world system ? Palestine obviously, can take no more. The Dominions have particular difficulties of their own —mainly concerned with immigrants who bring with them no capital. If Herr Hitler could be induced to release his Jews, with, say, 25 per cent, of *the capital they have been using to help what they on.ee thought would be a liberal Germany, most of Sir John Simon’s difficulties would disappear. But Germany is unlikely to do this unless and until she is made to realise that her treatment of the Jews does and must affect foreign estimates of her claim to be a civilised nation with whom civilised nations may properly deal. And so one comes back to Munich and all that one hoped for from Munich.”
