OBITUARY

MR CHARLES EDWARD CUMING AGRICULTURAL AUTHORITY PASSES Mr Charles Edward Cuming, who for many years was prominently associated with agricultural journalism in tho Waikato and in various parts of the Dominion, passed away at his residence, Hamilton East, this afternoon, at the age of 69 years. Mr Cuming, who was born in Hokitika and educated at the Christian Brothers’ School there, entered journalism as a young man, being associated with the old New Zealand Times over a period of 17 years. Later he was appointed editor to the Journal of Agriculture, and left that journal to assume the editorship of the New Zealand Farmer at Auckland. Later he came to Hamilton to launch a new publication The Dairyfarmer, the official organ of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company for a number of years. When that paper ceased publication he edited The New Zealand Farm and Home and later relinquished that project to enter on the free lance field, and In that capacity contributed, for several years, a special weekly feature on agricultural matters to the Waikato Times.

One of the foundation members of the Waikato Pig Recording Club he played a prominent part in the rapid rise of the industry and was the author of a booklet dealing with the general feeding and care of pigs. Mr Cuming was a well-known authority on grassland farming and actively associated himself with herd testing, especially in the Waikato. e A staunch member of the Catholic Church he was for a number of years a member of the Church committee of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and served also on the local school committee. He is survived by his wife and five children—Messrs C. A. Cuming (New Plymouth), T. Cuming and P. R. Cuming (Hamilton), Mesdames A. Jones (Hamilton) and G. M. 'Bacon (Auckland).
