DIRECTOR APPOINTED FORMER MEMBER FOR WAITAKI (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday The appointment of Mr D. Barnes as a director of the State Advances Corporation of New Zealand is announced in the Gazette to-night. Mr Barnes was born in Lancashire. England, in 1894. He came to New Zealand with his.parents, who took up farming in Canterbury, first near Christchurch and later in Waipara, Mr Barnes served at Gallipoli with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. He was wounded on August 27, 1913, and was invalided back to Egypt and later to New Zealand. During the war he took up flying and lie returned to New Zealand in 1919, and after managing a number of holdings took up land at Fairlie in 1927. -He was a foundation member of Hie Crown Tenants’ Association, and was president of the Fairlie branch in 193 4-35, ns well as being delegate to the central association.

Mr Barnes was elected as Labour member of Parliament for the Waitaki seat in 1935. and at flic last general eleetion was defeated by the National Party candidate. Mr D. C. Kidd, by 10 votes on the official count. On a magisterial recount sought by Mr Barnes Mr Kidd’s majority was increased to 14.
