NEARLY DROWNED

THROWN INTO BTREAM PETROL WAGGON COLLISION (Special to Times.) PUKEKOHE, Wednesday Thrown into the stream 15ft. below when his motor-lorry collided with a petrol tank waggon on Black's Bridge between Buckland and Tuakau this morning, Mr Frederick Keane, of Buckland, had a narrow escape from drowning. He was rescued after he had sunk for the third time by a nearby farmer, Mr P. Morell, whose milking shed Is on the bank of the stream near the bridge. Mr Morell was In his shed when the accident occurred. He saw* Mr Keane thrown into the water and rushed to the stream. Diving in he located Mr Keane at the bottom of a pool 12ft deep, and succeeded In bringing him to the bank. When the collision occurred a Maori youth, Major Hira, of Onewhero, who was a passenger on the lorry, was thrown out on to the decking of the bridge. As he lay there dazed a fire broke out on the lorry through petrol escaping.

The driver of the petrol waggon, Mr Claude Stembridge, of Pukekohe. put out the fire with a chemical extinguisher. removing the risk of the petrol in the waggon exploding. Mr Keane’s condition was serious.
