10,000 DEATHS CHILIAN EARTHQUAKE NEW YORK. Jan. 25. The Chilian representative of the United Press, who has succeeded in in reaching Concepcion, reports that the death roll in the Chilian earthquake will be at least 10.000. Fully half of the city's 40,000 inhabitants are believed to be casualties. The. injured are piled in the streets and the entire city is wrecked. THREAT TO PEACE FEDERAL PREMIER’S WARNING SITUATION NOT IMPROVED MELBOURNE, Jan. 26. After a meeting of the National Defence Council, Mr J. A. Lyons, the Federal Prime Minister, warned Australia of the danger of war. He sa;d “Since the end of last year the international situation has not improved. Events in Em ope and the East have moved m s direction which may precipitate a wo-ld conflict with tragic suddenness. What Australia ..lost realise qijtG-i) is that these ©volts vitally atiect treir country. ••In the last few years—even in the I act lew months —there have been vast changes in the world situation. These changes mean that the peace which Australia has enjoyed for 150 years is threatened.” Mr Lyons emphasised that effective defences in Australia would help to avert a world conflict.
