MORE FIRES

OUTBREAKS IN 1938 HAMILTON BRIGADE’S WORK Although there were few large outbreaks of fire in Hamilton during 1938, the Hamilton Fire Brigade received more calls during the year than in 1937. The total number received during the twelve months was 89, compared with 74 in the previous year. During 1938 there were 26 property fires compared with 24 in 1937, but there was a more substantial increase in rubbish and refuse fires, the brigade answering 43 calls to such fires as against 25 last year. There were 17 calls for chimney fires, one more than last year. A satisfactory feature was i that only three false alarms were given j against 9 last year, one being malicilously given this year and 5 in 1937. Year’s Fire Loss The 1938 fire loss in the brigade’s ! territory during the last 12 months | approximated £4OOO. Wallace, 1 Limited, Collingwood Street, on Augi list 2, and at Messrs Walker and : Cooper’s shop, Grey Street, on November 7. | Fires during the past month totalled 4 against 9 for the corresponding month last year, this month's fires comprising 3 property and one rubbish fire.
