■Ba- ’ ’ TWO MEN KILLED CAR FALLS OVER CLIFF ON NAPIER-TAUPO ROAD (Special to Times) NAPIER, Monday A fall of 250 ft. on to another portion of a tortuous road on which they were travelling between Napier and Taupo caused the deaths of two motorists, while another had a remarkable escape from serious injury. The three men are all meat inspectors employed by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company at Moerewa, North Auckland. The accident occurred at 6.4* o'clocklast evening on the Turangakumu Hill, 45 miles from Napier. The victims are:— Killed Mr William Kenneth Weir (29), single, Montrose Street, Sydenham, Christchurch. Mr Kenneth Samuel Maok (30), Tinakori Road, Wellington. Injured Mr Cedric Hogan, a young man, Main South Road, Upper Riccarton, Christchurch. Condition not serious. CAR SOMERSAULTS DEATH OF MAORI YOUTH (By Telegraph—Press Association) WAIPUKURAU, Monday A Maori. Pirie Cyril Wakefield, was killed at Wanstead, near Waipukurau, at 11.45 a.m. yesterday, when a flveseater car in which he was a passenger somersaulted down an 80ft. bank after running over a low slope at. the side of the road. The driver of the car, Dudley Roplha, of Foxton, the only other occupant, suffered minor abrasions and severe shock. He was admitted to the Waipukurau Hospital. KIHIKIHI COLLISION WELLINGTON MEN HURT (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Monday Suffering from injuries received when the car in which they were travelling collided with another vehicle on the Te Kuiti-Te Awamulu main highway, about 8 miles south of Kihikihi yesterday afternoon, two Wellington men were admitted to a Te Awamutu private hospital. They were Mr Albert Arguile (20), the driver, who suffered lacerations of the knee, and Mr William Headberg (25), a passenger, who received slight concussion. Four passengers received medical attention in Te Awamutu and later caught the limited express for Wellington. Facial cuts and slight head injuries were suffered by Mr Nicholas Segedin (29), single, of Korakonui, the driver of the other car involved, but after receiving medical attention he was able to proceed to a friend’s house in Otorohanga. Both cars were fairly extensively damaged. TRAIL OF DAMAGE CAR’S WILD CAREER (By Telegraph—Pres3 AssocJation) WELLINGTON, Monday Extensive damage was done by a motor-lorry owned by the Wellington Concrete Pipe Company, Limited, which became out of control at the top of one of the steepest hills in Wellington, Rodrigo Road, Kilbirnie, and careered wildly down to the bottom, shortly after 6 o’clock yesterday morning. The lorry narrowly missed a motor-car parked on the right at the top of the road and charged over to the left, where it hit another car, carrying it about 30 feet down the road, smashing in the back and ripping out the seats. The lorry then slewed over to the right again and mounted the footpath, carrying away a gate and a number of fence palings and smashing a telegraph pole in two. Continuing down the road it failed to take a bend and crashed through the door of an empty garage, coming to rest on its side. None of the three occupants was seriously injured. The driver, Mr J. Summers, suffered a wound over the right eye and abrasions. PEDESTRIAN KILLED KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR (By Telegraph—Press Association) BLENHEIM, Monday The new year began badly in Marlborough when a fatal accident occurred within two hours of midnight on Saturday. An elderly pedestrian was killed by an overtaking motor-car on the highway at Spring Creek. The victim was Mr James Reed (56) a single man, and a labourer by occupation. He was formerly a resident of Nelson. SHOCKING INJURIES YOUTH FALLS FROM TRAIN (By Telegraph—Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday Shocking injuries to his left ieg, left arm and chest were suffered by "a youth when he attempted to board the Taumarunui excursion train as it moved out of the New Plymouth railway station yesterday shortly after 5 p.m. The victim was:— Andrew Wilson (17), of Manunui, near Taurnarunui. After being picked up from the track when the train had passed, he was rushed by ambulance to the New Plymouth Hospital, where his condition to-day was reported to be critical.
