A COMMANDANT’S VIEW 700,000 MEN REQUIRED (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Saturday Once a member of Major-General Russell’s staff at Gallipoli, Brigadier P. M. McFarlane, C.8.E., of the Australian Staff Corps, arrived by the Narkunda. lie is now 'Commandant of Western Australia, and is on a health cruise. He was not prepared to discuss Australia’s defence preparations, but said a total force of 700.000 was required. He was confident that Western Australia would find its quota. “ When I left recruiting was in full swing,” he said. He added that Fremantle was regarded as one of the best defended ports in the Empire.
