HAWKE CUP

MARLBOROUGH OLT FIRST INNINGS REALISES 141 HOME BOWLERS SHARE HONOURS Marlborough had everything in their favour when they began their challenge match with Waikato for the Hawke Cup at Seddon Park this morning. The wicket was in perfect order and H. Autv, the visiting captain called correctly and elected to bat. Although the out-field was in good order it was inclined to he fast and rather deceptive. The teams are : Marlborough: H. Autv (captain), H. Bougen, A. Neal, G. Bonsall, C. O'Sullivan, D. Hastilow, S. Ross, N. Avery, G. Sowrnan, F. Cresswell, A. Cresswell. Waikato: R. Skeet, A. Lissette, A. J. Aitken, E. Everest, J. Everest, M. Lyon, T. Lyon, P. Bright, S. A. R. Badeley, R. Clough, H. Going. The sun was shining when Auty and Bougen went to the wickets. Bougen faced E. Everest at the pavilion end for the opening over which was a maiden. The captain took another maiden from M. Lyon and both batsmen were content not to take risks. However, Bougen stule a short single in Everest’s second over and when Lyon came on again, he opened out to one but J. Everest fielded well and a single was taken. After Auty had opened his account with a single both batsmen appeared keen to get among the runs but the fielding, particularly that of J. Everest, was too sound. Bougen Goes Lbw E. Everest had bowled four balls of his fourth over when Bougen fell a victim to the lbw rule. He had been at the wickets 33 minutes and scored two runs. Four runs were on the board. With Auty and Neale together double figures were reached. Both took a four off M. Lyon and 20 was on the board with the two batsmen still batting confidently. Neal Enterprising Going relieved E. Everest after the latter had bowled eight overs and the first ball from the new trundler, Neal sent through the covers for four. The next ball found the same mark and Marlborough had 4 0 up after an hour and five minutes’ play The second Marlborough wicket was claimed by Lissette, who secured an l.h.w. decision against Auty. The natsman had given his side a useful start, and at this stage the position was 42—2—12. At this point Bonsall joined Neal and lost no time In securing a single and a brace. Another pair to Bonsall and 50 was reached after 80 minutes at the wickets. When the total stood at 65, Neal came out cautiously to a ball from Badeley and Skeet. took a low catch behind the stumps. Neal batted resolutely and at no lime looked really uncomfortable, playing firmly to both slow and fast attack. His 2 4 compiled against steady bowling revealed his capabilities.

Bonsall was jofned by O’Sullivan, and the pair took the tally along to 83. Going sent a faster one down to Bonsall, who played over it and was bowled middle stump. 83 —4—23. Bonsall’s score was not marked by hard hitting but by neat and wellplaced shots. Hastilow and O’Sullivan played havoc with Badeley’s fourth over, taking 11 runs oft it. including two fours. When Going came on at the pavilion end, 'Bright missed a hard catch in the slips from O’Sullivan. Century Reached Hastilow lifted Badeley out into the long-field in the next over to bring up the century after nearly two hours’ play. Shortly after this. Hastilow sent an easy catch off Going into the slips and Badeley dropped a sitter. However. Badeley made amends when he clean howled O’Sullivan. 109—5 16. The total had reached 120 when Skeet claimed his second victim. Ross snicking a ball from Going into his hands. 12 0 —6—3. Avery at not time looked comfortable against Going and no more runs had been added when the bowler took his wicket. Hastilow was the first stumping victim. The score was still at 120 when Skeet. after several attempts, caught the batsman out of his territory. Hastilow hatted well for 27 at a time when runs were needed. A. Cresswell and Sowrnan fought for runs and were together at the luncheon adjournment when the score was 133 for eight. T. Lyons was brought on to bowl for the first time in the match after the adjournment, and with his second ball he had A. Cresswell caught at mid-off by J. Everest—l33—9—lo. Sowrnan and F. Cresswell were responsible for putting 140 nn the hoard, hut just after that position had been reached. Sowrnan sent Badeley a catch in the slips and Marlborougn’s first innings closed for 141.
