MANAWATU GORGE PROGRESS FURTHER FALLS EXPECTED (By Telegraph--Press Association) PALMERSTON N\, Thursday Eight days have elapsed since the big slip occurred in the Manawatu Gorge bringing 4 ouu cubic yards of | material to the main highway toward i the Palmerston North end. Apprei ciable progress has been made in cleari ing operations. ; Beginning at 10 p.m. on December 1 21 a mechanical shovel which was I brought from the Milson deviation continued throughout tlie night, all day Thursday into Friday night, ceasing at ! 2 a.m. on Saturday. Two floodlights for which electric power was generated by a crude oil motor were used to throw a 200 camllepower light on to the hill face each night. Since then jit has been kept throughout the hours i Resuming steady work yesterday, the .mechanical shovel lias now made a considerable impression on the face of the hill which is about three chains ! wide. A considerable amount of loose j material lias to be freed from the top portion and investigation of this part , may show other falls imminent. It is 'possible also a secondary slip may def velop at tbe lop of tlie present scar although it should not be of such large j dimensions as the main fail.
