CURRENT PROGRAMMES

ROXY THEATRE “Live, Love and Learn,” is set largely in the colourful atmosphere of Greenwich village's Bohemian art colony, and develops a sparkling story of the married life of a penniless artist! and the girl who forsook wealth and society to marry him. In abrupt contrast to the grim scenes of “Night Must Fall,” the most recent teaming triumph of Robert Montgomery and Rosalind Russell, the settings of “Live, Love and Learn” are faithful reproductions of Greenwich Village. If he lived, this daring British secret agent sitting with the German high command in the uniform of a Prussian Lancer could strike a deadlier blow than a million marching men! If he succeeded, it meant heartbreak; if he failed, the firing squad. Characterised by jolting realism that makes it one of the most suspenseful spy stories ever screened, “Lancer Spy” stars Dolores Del Rio, George Sanders and Peter Lorre. One of the “Grime Doesn’t Pay” series and a coloured Pete Smilh Oddity are also screened. CIVIC THEATRE In “I’ll Give a Million” Warner Baxter appears as Tony Newlander, a wealthy young man spending a holiday on a friend’s yacht in Marseilles. At a party on hoard the boat he jumps overboard to rescue a tramp and, as he is drying his clothes and talking with the rescued man, the idea comes to him to give up his uneventful life for a period and take to the road. He confides to the tramp, Louis, that he is willing to give a million dollars to anyone who will show him genuine kindness, believing him to be poor. Louis is unable to keep the secret, and this amazing story reaches the newspapers. The result is that Marseilles becomes crowded with hundreds of tramps, and the dignified townspeople go out of tlieT way to treat them well, In the meantime Newlander has found the way to a series of romantic adventures. “ALWAYS GOOD-BYE” “Always Good-bye,” with Barbara Stanwyck and Herbert Marshall heading a strong cast, will head the new programme to-morrow. There will be two sessions, at 8 and 10.30 p.m.

REGENT THEATRE “It’s in the Air” tells a riotous story of what happens to George Formby when he “accidentally” joins the Royal Air Force. Formby is surrounded by an exceptionally strong supporting cast, and a female lead such as Polly Ward gives a balance of contrasting ” strength to the star s straight-from-the-shoulder ’ comedy methods. “DAD AND DAVE” Bert Bailey, the original Dad of “On Our Selection’’ and now featured -n “Dad and Dave Came to Town,” is making a personal tour of New Zealand and will appear in Hamilton for a season commencing to-morrow. llis personality is as refreshing as a southerly breeze, and in his creation of Australia’s national character, Dad, he reflects his own honesty, dry humour and broad outlook oil life. A top hat, morning coat and faintly checked trousers have transformed Bert Bailey into a very 1938 version of Dad in the riotous comedy, “Dad and Dave Come to Town,” but the indomitable Rudd spirit is still there. STATE THEATRE “Road Gang” is a thrilling story of the terrors of some penal institutions, and there is also a romance of a girl who sticks by her man even when he is convicted of a crime. There is a wealth ol‘ dynamic drama and fast action, with thrill upon thrill, including a convict’s strike and battle with police guards who use gas bombs, in the bowels of the earth: a fight between police cars and a car *n which a convict is fleeing for his life; and the blasting of a mine tunnel with dynamite. “The Singing Kid” is a powerful drama which swings intermittently between hilarious comedy and heartwrenching pathos. Besides A 1 Jolson, the cast includes Sybil Jason, Beverly Roberts, Edward Everett Horton, Lyle Talbot, Allen Jenkins and Claire Dodd. “BACK IN CIRCULATION” “Back in Circulation,” featuring Pat O’Brien and Joan Blondell, and “Renegade Ranger,” with George O’Brien in the lead, will be screened to-night. There will be two screenings, at 7.30 and 10.30 p.m. THEATRE ROYAL “Postal Inspector” reproduces with startling realism the flood conditions which burst down upon many cities. When the story begins. Ricardo Cortez. an inspector in the mail service, goes after some swindlers who have used the mails to defraud the public. When rushing torrents overflow their banks, he faces tlie task of creating new links in the line of communication, to keep the mails moving. At 1 lie height of the Hood a desperate gang robs the mails, with sensational results. “Millions” is a very amusing j comedy, in which Gordon Barker ami ■ Frank Pettingell, the two clever English comedians, lead the funmaking in j a manner that keeps the audience interested and amused throughout. Jane Lair an 1 Richard Ilearue have the romantic leads “XT’S A GRAND OLD WORLD” ‘•11/s a Grand Old Worlil,” to be screened to-morrow, is a very tunny | comedy, featurin'? the popular Sandy ! I‘uwelL Cyril Hitcliard. well known on the New Zealand stage, is in the cast.
