DRIVER’S MAD SPEED

CHASED BY INSPECTOR SENSATION IN THE HUTT (By Telegraph —Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday A sensation was caused in Petone and Lower Hutt about 11 o'clock this morning by the sight of a motor truck careering through the main streets at upwards of 50 miles an hour with traffic scattering in all directions, inspector A. J. Archer, a Hutt Valley traffic officer, was at an important junction in Petone and set off in pursuit. The speed of the truck increased as the driver realised he was being pursued. Every effort of the inspector to stop the man was in vain and several times he was forced into the gutter and on to the cycle track at the side of the road. The Hutt Bridge was crossed at a speed but little reduced and on through Lower Ilutt and across the far boundary went the chase until the truck driver was about half a mile from his home when the pace became toe great for the truck mechanism and the carburettor dropped off. Leaping from his motor-cycle. Ihe inspector attempted to stop the driver who pushed him away and proceeded at a rapid run for his home.' The inspector telephoned for the police in whose hands the matter has been left. Tt transpired later that the truck driver’s unusual behaviour was due *o not being in good health. It is unlikely that any charge will follow*.
