OBITUARY
MR SAMUEL WATT The death occurred yesterday at Hamilton of Mr Samuel Watt, aged 66 years. Born in Napier, the late Mr Watt was for some years driving and later went north to Waipu where he was engaged in work in the kauri forests. After five years in that district he came to the Waikato and took up land at Te Hoe, being one of the first settlers there. He had to give up farming owing to ill-health, and some 20 years ago retired to Hamilton. The late Mr Watt is survived by his wife, three sons and four daughters, Messrs John Watt, James Watt (Rotorua), Samuel Watt (Gordonton) and Mesdames S. Powell, G. Palmer (Hamilton), A. Rumbles (Maeroa) and Miss Janet Watt (Hamilton). There are five grandchildren.
MR ALAN WARDLAW PROMINENT POLITICAL CAREER (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 28, 3 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 28 The death is announced of Mr Alan Wardlaw, a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council. He was Minister of Agriculture in the McPhee Government from 1932 until 1934, and leader of the Government in the Legislative Council for several years. v FATHER PATRICK FAY (By Tewgraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday The death has occurred of the Rev. Father Patrick Fay, S.M.. aged 65. Father Fay was educated at St. Patrick's College, where he was a distinguished scholar and athlete. His record for the hop, step and jump was unbeaten for 25 years. He studied for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary’s, Hawke's Bay, and was ordained in 1896. He was stationed at Blenheim, Temuka, Nelson, Napier and'Hastings.
DR. M. C. F. MORKANE (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday The death has occurred of Dr. Michael Charles Frederick Morkane, noted gynaecologist. He was born at Port Chalmers in 1877 and educated at the Christian Brothers' School, Dunedin, and Otago Medical School, from which he graduated in 1901. He was a specialist of world-wide experience. He was awarded the honorary fellowship of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists last year. Dr. Morkane's only brother is Monsignor Morkane, administrator of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. lie is survived by one son. MR A. E. GASCOIGNE (By Telegraph—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Tuesday The death has occurred of Mr Albert Ernest Gascoigne, who as a partner in Ihe legal firm of Solomon, Gascoigne Solomon and Sinclair, occupied a prominent posilon in legal circles in Dunedin during the past 40 years. He was 72.
MR WILLIAM SMART
(By TelegTaph—Press Association) DUNEDIN, Tuesday The death has occurred of Mr William Smart (81, formerly superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited. MR H. MCDONNELL (By Telegraph—Press Association) ASHBjgRTON. Tuesday. A well-known owner of trotters. Mr Handle McDonnell, died suddenly, aged over 70. The most famous trotter Mr McDonnell owned was Emmeline, which established two records at Forbury Park, Dunedin, in 1912—the mile in 2.8 3-5 and the two miles in 4.30. At the time the former figure was a world's record for a mare and Ihe latter an Australian record.
