BALANCE SOUGHT
DOMINION PRODUCTION PLANS OF GOVERNMENT CULTIVATING WASTE LANDS (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Wednesday Plans to bring into cultivation large areas of waste lands in the Auckland Province under the Government developmental programme were revealed by the Minister of Labour the Hon. P. C. Webb, in an interview to-day. Mr Webb said early in the new year important changes involving the transfer of men from public works and special employment works would be considered by Cabinet. The Government would also make vigorous efforts to stimulate production in manufacturing industries. More craftsmen would be trained for new’ trades and young men would be employed in directions where they would be assisted to become farmers. Mr Webb indicated that the No. 13 scheme would be thoroughly reviewed with the object of transferring men to avenues of permanent production. Something which would provide for the seasonal ebb and flow in production would be necessary to take the place of that scheme. The Government was conscious of the necessity for increasing the population in order to bring about the expansion of secondary industries which is essential if those industries were to bo more extensively prosecuted. A more balanced form of production was essential to remove the weaknesses in the Dominion’s economic system.
