TOURIST ROUTE
TE AWAMUTU-KAWHIA SCHEME FARMERS’ UNION DISCUSSION Further discussion on the proposal i to reconstruct the Te Awamutu- | Kawhia main highway as a tourist route took place at the monthly meeting of the Waikato sub-provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union today, when replies to the executive’s remit were received from local bodies in the district. In reply to the executive’s invitation to attend a conference to discuss the matter, the Waipa County Council and Te Awamutu Borough Council had decided to be represented, but the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce had decided to take no action. “ The attitude in Hamilton seems to he that we are pressing for the Te Awamutu-Kawhla Road to the exi elusion of all others,” commented Mr t C. J. Pierce, of Ohaupo. “ That Is not , so, and if there are suitable alterna- ' tive routes we are prepared to discuss them.” In reply to Mr W. B. Cummings it was pointed out that there was a choice of routes, and if any of the others were better the Farmers’ Union would be prepared favourably to discuss them. At present the Te Awa-mutu-Kawhia route was the only altweather one. The remit had not come from Te Awamutu, but from Ohaupo, which was more in sympathy with Hamilton than with Te Awamutu. The matter was deferred until after the executive’s annual conference on April 11.
