TE RAPA TRACKS

GALLOPS IX THE RAIN WAIKATO HORSES PREPARE TRACK MAY BE HEAVY OHMAHA SHAPES WELL (By "Martian”) Following the rain of yesterday, which continued practically unabate*d throughout, the night, the course at Te Rapa was sodden and under water in sections this morning and consequently there was a complete dislocation of what promised to be a series of interesting final gallops for the Waikato Racing Club’s Summer meeting, on Saturday and Monday. Steady rain was falling prior to the breakfst interval and though it eased up later in the morning conditions generally were 1 most unpleasant and the majority of ; galloping that took place was done in! the rain. The course proper was closed and all fast work was executed on the No. 1 grass, which, considering the amount of rain Uiat had fallen, was in comparatively good order. The best efforts of the morning were those of Ohmaha over half a mile, Merial over five furlongs and Lagoon ovjr a round. Wotan and Philemup arrived from New Plymouth this morning. Trilliarch N. R. McKenzie; was a head in front of Mangukaha S. J. Tremain) at the completion of five furlongs in 1.7, the final half-mile being rut out. in 535. It was a useful effort on the part of both 1 horses who handled the conditions well. A Useful Five. A useful five-furlong effort was credited to Centaurus J. Winder) and Susan (F. Hain , who came home from the five-furlong peg in 1.75. Prince Acre J. Winder; finished clear of the maiden Xichavo F. Hain) , in a three furlong dash in 39 l-ss. Respectful (J. McLaughlin) was not bustled to run six furlongs In 1.27. He looks well but was not at home In the conditions. May Song (J. Winder), after travelling last over the first couple of furlongs, was easing up over the latter stages of six furlongs in 1.2 2. She appears to be all the better for her racing at Rotorua The Bast Half-mile The best half-mile of the morning was that of Ohmaha (A. G. Murray), who accounted for Miss Clipper (J. McLaughlin) and Yalmint J. F. Fergus) in 51 l-ss. Ohmaha revelled in the conditions and he is not without prospects in the Linley Hack here on Saturday. L’Allegro (A. Gilmer) was worked over a round being timed to negotiate his final five furlongs in 1.12 1-5. Merial (J. Winder) and Te Poura (F. Hain), assisted over the first couple of furlongs by the two-year-old Vitement, got to the end of five furlongs in 1.5 l-ss. Merial, suited by the going, executed her work in good style while Te Poura's effort was a commendable one. Bryce Street (J. F. Fergus) and Lucidus (N. C. Trillo) negotiated a round in 2.55, their final six furlongs being cut out in 1.26 1-5. A smart five furlongs was credited to the promising maiden Cometarium (N. R. McKenzie) and Lady Montana (Midwood) who clocked 1.55. Cometarium has been shaping consistently ■ well on the tracks of late and interest . will attach to his showing at the rneet- [ ing. On Saturday he is entered for the [ Beerescourt Hack (7 furlongs) with ; 7.0. Lagoon’s Good Round . Lagoon (W. Thomson) ran once ' round in 2.2 4-5, the first- six furlongs ‘ in 1.20. She has been suffering from soreness of late but this was not ap- ' parent in her gallop this morning. Dark Shadow (W. Thomson) and ' Malagigi (J. McLaughlin ran six fur- ’ longs in 1.21 1-5, their last half-mile occupying 565. Dark Shadow s prospects will not be enhanced in the event of heavy going ruling on Saturday. Master Brierlv and Prince Rangi worked separately down the straight. Riding Engagements Additional riding engagements for the first day of the Waikato meeting S. J. Tremain. —Goldation. Gay L. Clifford. —Windcress, Prival, Paso Robles, Mazir. J. Mclnally.—Dark Shadow, Full of Scotch. J. Muir.—Huskie. J. Winder.—Golden Sheila, Master Brierly, Centaurus, May Song. Prince Rangi. N. C. Trillo.—Englishman. H. Turvey.—Mungacre. L. Dulieu.—Wotan. Senacre, Brown Lap. L. Malloy, an apprentice attached to S. J. Reid's Hastings stable, will be in attendance at the meeting, and as he can go to scale to 7.6. there should be ample opportunities for him. He rode with a fair measure of success in Australia. Prospects for Meeting At the present juncture it is difficult to estimate what the condition of the track will be on Saturday. There is still a chance that the going will be reasonably good as the track here dries out quickly and with a let up in the weather this may be achieved. Howj ever, in the event of a further soaking I to-day and to-morrow the result will I be he aw coing for the meeting and i horses with ability to handle such conditions will advance in favour.
