ROYAL VISIT TO INDIA
REASONS FOR CANCELLATION APPRECIATED IN LONDON (Official Wireless) (Received Feb. 12, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 11 The reasons for the King’s decision to abandon on general and financial grounds the project for paying a visit to India next winter is fully understood here and caused no surprise. The Times says the outlook for the visit might he brighter a few months hence, but it was necessary to take a decision now and His Majesty had in mind the loss and inconvenience which would result from any change in plans after preparations had begun. RECORD RECRUITING SATISFACTORY ENLISTMENTS STATEMENT BY MINISTER (omclal Wireless) (Received Feb. 12, 12.30 p.m.) RUGBY, Feb. 11 The Secretary of State for War, Mr L. Hore-Beksha, in a speech at Devonport said that in 12 months the regular army had taken over 3600 more recruits than the previous year, and in the same period the territorial army had added the equivalent of a whole division to its strength. Applicants were, in fact, almost outrunning the Department’s capacity to put up buildings to accommodate them. The defences of every one of the home naval ports was manned by territorials. The War Office to-night announced that 3116 recruits were enlisted in the territorial army during January, which constitutes another record month for territorial recruiting.
