The telegram says that Japan has occupied 818000 square miles, onefifth of China's territory. The number of Chinese' refugees is 125,000,000, or one-third of the country’s population. The Japanese spokesman announced an intensified drive against the Chinese Communists and partisans in Shansi. He added that the Japanese in a battle over several days wiped out the communists at Kuchiarchen, twenty miles north of Taiyuan and captured five important leaders near Huanping. They killed 90 in a Shantung village, and arrested a number of suspects in North Tsingtao. The Japanese at west Weihsen attacked a unit of the eighth route army inflicting heavy losses.
