SUCCESSFUL NURSES

CERTIFICATES PRESENTED WAIKATO HOBPITAL PASBEB AN EXCELLENT RECORD “Although there is a great deal more prosperity now than three to four years ago, it is indeed pleasing to us to see that there are still a large number of young women from town and country willing to offer their services as probationary nurses to the board,” commented Mr J. J. Ryburn, chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board, when presenting the certifleate-s and medals to the nurses who were successful in the State November examinations. The presentation ceremony was held in the new Nurses’ Home at the Waikato Hospital yesterday, when besides members of the board and staff, mothers and relatives of the successful candidates, were present for the first time. There was no doubt that the nurses obtained excellent training at the Waikato Hospital, added Mr Ryburn, as again a gold medal had been won for top place in New Zealand, and of the 15 nurses who sat for the general State examination all were successful. In the maternity section there were only three failures out of 17 candidates, and the chairman contended that this reflected the greatest credit not only on the ability of the nurses but also on the institution as a training centre.

Referring to the new scheme instituted by the lady superintendent, Miss B. Menzies, whereby trainees were taken off their ward duties for five or six weeks to attend special schools at the hospital, Mr Ryburn said that the scheme appeared to be working very satisfactorily. He heartily congratulated the successful students, and presented them with their certificates. Mr F. Findlay, a member of the board, endorsed the congratulations of the chairman and paid a tribute to the courtesy of the nurses and members of the staff. He added that he had heard many people commenting favourably on the courtesy extended to patients and visitors at the Waikato Hospital. “I am very proud of the Waikato Hospital and the part I am proudest of is the nursing staff—they never let us down no matter what the circumstances,” commented Dr. M. M. Hockin, the medical superintendent, in adding his congratulations. He paid a tribute to the loyalty of the staff, and this was endorsed by Miss Menzies. The following were the successful nurses in the general examination who were presented with their certificates: Misses L. Byrt, N. G. Cannell, M. R. Chamberlain, R. A- Davis, M. Davidson, E. I. Dickey, p. l. Garvey, A. I. Harlow, E. G. Olson, B. A. Primrose, L. E. Trow, J. R. Watt, E. Jeffery.

SPECIAL AWARDS GOLD MEDAL WON “This is an outstanding achievement and one of which the board and hospital is very proud,” said Mr J. J. Ryburn, chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board, in presenting a gold medal to Miss F. N. McGregor, who secured top place in the- Dominion in the recent State maternity examinations. “Last year Miss McGregor was top for New Zealand in the general State examination, and this is therefore her second gold medal.” Mr Ryburn heartily congratulated Miss McGregor on her excellent record, and expressed the hope that she would continue in the board’s service for some time. Another special award was the silver medal, also presented by the board for general excellence on and off duty and in theoretical and practical work, won by Miss R. A. Davis, who also was the recipient of hearty congratulations.
