CARRIAGES DERAILED
ACCIDENT ON RIMUTAKAB NO CASUALTIES MASTERTON. Sunday Three carriages and a brake van on the 7.50 a.m. Wellington-Wairarapa express were derailed on the Rimutaka inollne between the Summit and Cross Creek on Saturday wording. No one was injured, and an auxiliary service was commissioned, enabling the passengers to reach their destination with a minimum of delay. As the train, which was crowded with passengers, was proceeding down the inollne about three-quarters of a mile from Cross Creek the passengers felt a terrific upthrust, the force of which threw many of them out of their seats. It was found that a fourth brake van and the following three carriages had been derailed. The second carriage was hanging at an angle of about 45 degrees, but the other two and the brake van were in an upright position. Apart from minor cuts, scratches And bruises, the passengers escaped injury. The damage to the permanent way was confined principally to the centre brake line, which was torn up for a short distance. As yet no official explanation of tlie cause of the accident has been given, but it is stated that ft was due to the centre brake line tearing up.
