ENCOURAGEMENT OF DESIGNING PUBLIC AWARD OF MEDAL Street architecture of Melbourne is benefiting from the enterprise of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects In making an annual public award of a medal for the designing of a building of exceptional merit. It is mentioned in the “Journal” of tiie Institute that one of the purposes of the award is to direct public attention to new buildings of outstanding architehtural merit. The Council of the Institute feels that by singling out and acknowledging each year a new building which contributes to the civic beauty and architecture of Victoria a wider recognition of its good qualities is encouraged. It is also felt that the annual award of the R.V.I.A. Street Architecture medal is fostering a widespread appreciation and sense of civic responsibility among the architects and citizens of the State. The development of such a sense is assisting materially the co-operation between building owners and architects that is necessary to the production of structures of extreme beauty as well as of internal efficiency. Further, the award enables due recognition to bo paid to architects who attain outstanding achievement in tiie construction of buildings of high architectural quality, and tha award is spurring members of the profession on to constant endeavour towards obtaining beauty in civic architecture.
