HAMILTON LAKE

IMPROVEMENTS EFFECTED

WORK OF DOMAIN BOARD MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS In spite of increased financial commitments, resuiting from higher wages and costs generally, tiie Hamilton Jjomam Board during the past year has been successful in maintaining, and in many respects improving, the extensive lands in aud around the borough which come under its jurisdiction. As in the past, particular attention has been directed to effecting improvements at the lake domain and during the year the entire eastern frontage of the lake has been carefully prepared for the laying down of lawns next season. Improvements have also been made to the golf-links at the lake and to the kiosk, while a large number of native trees of various species have been added to the native plantation. Additional seats and benches have been set up, the bathing area lias been materially improved, and about 500 trees and shrubs were planted in the lake domain grounds during the planting season. The lake itself is now freer of weeds than it lias been for the past 15 years. Other Domain Lands In addition to the work at the lake, the maintenance and improvement of other domain lands has been carried out uninterruptedly. Considerable work has been done at Hinemoa Park to make this ground suitable for the weekly meetings of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club and a large programme of work has successfully been carried out at Galloway Park. There about 16 acres of land have been taken in and prepared and next year that area will be laid down in grass.

The surroundings of the tennis courts in Rostrevor Street have also been improved during the past year and the routine work of keeping down noxious weeds on all domain lands has been carried on as a matter of course.

In view of the handicaps to its operations, noted above, the year lias proved quite a successful one, in ihe opinion of the board’s chairman, Mr W. H. Paul. Particular attention had been paid to the lake domain, as it was felt, from past experience, that improvements there were enjoyed by a greater number of people than those made to any other of the lands under the hoard’s control.
