FARM INDUSTRY.
PROPOSALS IN BRITAIN. MILK, POULTRY AND BACON. ASSISTANCE BY GOVERNMENT. (omclal wiroipss.) RUGBY, July 29. The early publication of proposals for the milk industry, which will require legislation, and of a -statement on the poultry Industry, was promised by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr W. S. Morrison, when -speaking in the House of Commons. He said the Government had given careful consideration to the difficulties of the bacon industry, which appeared to be attributable In part to the Increase in pig feeding costs and in part to the high costs of bacon manufacture in the United Kingdom. The Government believed that if the Industry were found on a small number of efficient factories, provided with adequate and regular supplies of pigs nf good qualify and conformation, sufficient economies could be secured in the cost of curing to enable the industry fo lie maintained during the period of high feeding costs. The Contract System. The Government accordingly would be willing to propose that some assistance -should bo accorded to the industry over a sulfieient period to enable I in* contract system for Hie supply of bacon pigs lo be re-established. If it was assured that reorganisation of bacon factories • >u:.i so as to hold the promise of a reduction in curing coals, which would enable producers and curers to work at a profit, I lie Government desired to give further consideration, In consultation with flic industry, lo flic nature, of the changes required and the form that they -should fake, with a view to laving detailed proposals before Parliament as early as possible. In the meantime the. present arrangements for the regulation of imports would continue.
