GERMAN GUNS MOUNTED. A RING OF UNDERGROUND FORTIFICATIONS HEAVY BATTERIES TWO MILES FROM THE ROCK (United Press Assn. —Elee. Tel. Copyright.) (Received July 17, 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 16. The Gibraltar correspondent of the Herald, detailing how the rock is almost completely ringed with heavy guns and underground fortifications, built under the supervision of Germans, says the first shipment of a dozen 12-inch guns and a consignment of 16-inch guns were landed on March 20 from the von Scheer, which also brought technicians, who are still garrisoned at Algeciras. In the same month the German tanker Max Albrecht discharged machine-guns and anti-aircraft guns. Heavy batteries have been installed along fifteen miles of the coast between Algeciras and Tarifa, also at San Roque, only two miles behind Gibraltar.

(Received July 17, 1.0 p.m.) PARIS, July 16. •Following the expression of fears of guns threatening Gibraltar, those well-informed in Paris declare that there are similar conditions In Northwest Spain, where guns could fire across a large area of French territory. It is alleged that there are Germanbuilt fortifications and gun platforms in General Franco’s territory at the top of the Pyrenees.

There was fle'rce fighting west of Madrid. Government artillery scored a direct hit and blew up an insurgent explosives magazine. The Government claims the retention of all ground that it had gained westward of the capital. It asserts that the offensive is slowly progressing.
