SENTENCED FOR ASSAULT. TROUBLE DUE TO DRINK. “ It appears as if the trouble you have had has been due to drink and I hope that you appreciate what drink has done for you,” said Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M.. in the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court this morning in sentencing Frank McCullum (23). a labourer, for assault upon John Blackstock. “ I have considered your case end I have had the advantage of a report from the probation officer.” continued the magistrate. “ You went to this unfortunate man’s room and made a suggestion to him and when he objected you brutally assaulted Idm. I propose to place you on probation for two years, one condition betbg that you take out and maintain a prohibition order against yourself, with a view to warding off your craving for drink; or at least it might assist you to that end. Another condition I will impose on you is ttiat you pay the costs of ttie prosecution, ttie medical ex-

penses and the expenses Incurred by tlie police.

*• As a measure of some compensation to the unfortunate victim I will order you to pay £2 4 damage*, at the rate of £i per month,” concluded Mr Paterson.
