PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
NEEDED IN HAMILTON
MOTORISTS’ OPINION. APPLICATION TO BOROUGH* The necessity for pedestrian crossings in Victoria street was expressed by members of Hie Hamilton Advisory Uunmutiee of the Automobile Association (Auckland), at the first monthly meeting of the year last evening. It was decided to ask the Hamilton Borough Council to provide proper crossings between London Street and Knox Street, in coniormity with the new motor regulations. The area officer, Mr V. D. Edwards, said that the new pedestrian crossings had been instituted in Auckland and the system is at present working well. Traffic could be forced to stop to allow pedestrians to cross at the special crossings, and while iti is not an offence for pedestrians to cross at other points in the street they did so at their own risk. In Auckland most pedestrians wait until they arrived at one of the special crossings before walking to the opposite side of the street. New Regulations. The regulations provided that pedestrians, who do not use the special crossings where they are provided, must give way to motor traffic, and must cross at right angles to the pavement. They should also remain near to the pavement until the street is clear, which indicates that waiting on the centre of the streets, near the studs as is often the practice in Hamilton, would be an offence. Where crossings are provided pedestrians should cross the street as rapidly af possible.
