BRADDOCK v. LOUIS. GUARANTEE OF 500,000 DOLLARS. United Press Assn.—Elec. TeL Copyright. CHICAGO, Feb. 20. The American heavy-weight boxers, James Braddook and Joe Louis, have signed a contraot under which Braddock will receive 50 per cent of the reoeipts of a guarantee of 500,000 dollars, plus half the oinema and radio rights, and Louis 17i per oent of the receipts. Mr J. Foley, who is now the sole promoter, said he expected that there would be no difficulty in connection with the Madison Square Garden contract. The reference to the Madison Square Garden contract is to the faot that the authorities at that famous centre had arranged a contest between Braddock and Max Schmeling. Since then an announcement was made that a match with Schmeling could not be permitted on account of the strong anti-Nazi feeling in America.
MIDDLE-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
STEELE DEFEATS RISKO. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. . NEW YORK, Feb. 20. Freddie Steele retained the world middle-weight title to-day, defeating Babe Risko after an unexciting 15round bout before a small crowd at Madison Square Garden. The decision of the judges and referee was unanimous in awarding 11 rounds to Steele and four to Risko. The receipts totalled 15,686 dollars.
Risko appeared extremely slow in comparison with his rival and instead of employing the reckless abandon characteristic of him he retreated constantly, pressing Steele to only infrequent flurries. Thus Steele was unquestionably the winner, since he did most of the fighting. Steele’s best round was the sixth, in which he hurled Risko to the ropes and rocked him with hooks to the face and body. The round was awarded to the challenger, owing to a low blow by Steele. Steele caught Risko off his balance in the 14th round and sent him to the canvas for a fraction of a second.
