THE MAINE ELECTIONB. REPUBLICAN PARTY SUCCESSES. NOT A SWEEPING VICTORY. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. NEW YORK, Sept. 15. Preliminary returns in the Maine elections show clear Republican majorities for four of the five important offices. Apparently, however, the victory is not sweeping enough to indicate a national trend toward Mr A. M. Landon,. Republican candidate for the Presidency, for which the leaders of the party had hoped. With about half the votes counted, llie Republican candidate for Hie Governorship, Mr Barrows, lias a lead of more than 20,000 votes over the Democrat candidate, Mr Dubord. On the other hand, the Republican Senator Mr Wallace 11. White has a majority of only 8000 over his Democrat opponent, Mr L. J. Brann. The Republicans appear to have elected the State’s three members of the House of Representatives by moderate majorities/ t A cablegram from New -York on September 12 stated: —Although no national Issues are involved in the Maine elections, for historical reasons they are of tremendous psychological importance. The proverb has arisen: >*As goes Maine so goes the nation,” although often this has not been the case.
