i 98rd Aumvansmv. MAGISTRATE‘S BLUNDER. To—day marks the 93rd anniversary of the massacre at \Vairau, Nelson, caused through the indiscretion of a resident magistrate who was lendeavouriug to make peace with the Maori chief, Te Raupara-ha, after he had burned the huts of a. surveying party who had, without authority, en—croached upon his territory. The Maori chief's action had been justiiied, but the threatening manner of the magistrate again incensed the natives. It is not known who fired the first shot, but an engagement took place and the European party was overcome with the loss of 17 lives.
