IMPORTED ORANGES.
A DUTY SUGGESTED ; ASSISTANCE TD TRADE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Trading figures relating to fruit handling were given in evidence by Mr J. B. Donald, of Auckland, bet‘ore the industries and Commerce Committee of the House of Representatives today. .\ir Donald afterwards said the island trade in oranges could exist only by Government assistance or restriction on imports from other countries. To build up the industry properly suitable shipping service was essential. He suggested a duty of 1d per lb. on oranges from other countries from April 1 to October 31, with per—haps, a rebate in the ease or Austral—ian oranges. it Australian oranges were admitted free, he said, Cook Is—land oranges would not [hill at market in competition with them. He did not think a control board would improve the position in any shape or form. Mr F. \V. Platts, oi‘ iiamilion, l‘orm—erly Resident Conmiissioner of the Cook islands, referred to the duties of the New Zeuland Government to what had been declared an integral part of the Dominion, and insisted that there should be provided a Government. vessel to convey oillcials and medical om—cers round the group and to gather copra and other cargoes from the 15— lands to the central shipping depot at Burotongal There was an opening for a vessel like the Maui Pomare, which could, at the same time, carry Government ofllcers and produce, The committee adjourned until Tuesday. ‘
